Craft Store Hijinks

It starts with a mission and ends with balloons.

A quick trip to the store is never easy with my youngest two children. Add the word “craft” to the before the title of store, well it’s going to be time consuming and a little bit overwhelming. With an upcoming birthday party to attend as well as a school project due next week, trip to the craft store was no doubt in order. Instead of leaving with just a birthday gift and art supplies for the looming project, our shopping bag included toy animals. Did I fail to mention two balloons and five trips around the store?

Yes, five trips and perhaps one of those multiple rounds was my fault. I know this store like the back of my hand, but I should’ve had a couple of alternative plans for the art project as they did not have the seasonal item that I anticipated being in stock. The art project, creating a shamrock with paper and craft supplies was originally in my head involving St Patrick’s Day stamps. There was no shamrock anything to be found, not a single stamp or cardstock resembling clovers. So the only solution to making an artsy clover with paper involved in my head at the spur of the moment were the next best things, pom-poms and glitter. Let’s be honest, nothing says I made it more than glitter glue and markers.

Another trip in the store involved the dreaded I want something too mentality of two children who were attempting to use their best behavior. So naturally in an aisle of markers, the ladies found cute pencil bags, both with animal designs. I was pleased that they never saw the slim. What I never calculated at the back of the store near the gift set I was going to get for the upcoming birthday were animal figurines. Both quickly became fell in love with their animals of choice, a cheetah and a domestic cat. I have never been fan of placing things on a random shelf, now found myself making another trip to the front to return the pencil bags.

When I finally began to believe we now making progress, the search to find my mom was now the next task. The human who insisted that she was just going in to look now was juggling multiple containers of paint. I dared to joke that she was not carrying several $5 mystery boxes. So essentially one trip to find my mother had multiplied into two as she wanted a mystery box. Luckily, I had a cart and the two boxes were added to the mix. With no more room in the cart and my daughters’ patience now wearing thin, a path to the register was now in order.

So how did this momma do? With two boxes promising at least $100 worth of products each as well as plain green cardstock, two bags of green pom-poms, glitter glue, markers and gift set, I did not do so bad. The 40% off coupon took $6 off the gift set and a $5 voucher was available to cash in, the bill came out to a respectable $55 with tax. The cashier who had a ton of balloons offered the girls a balloon each which provided a lot of fun after the school project was over. Although the visit to the craft store took some time, a good time was had by all!
