Kids Stepping Up The Designer Game

Nothing says awesome like designing polo shirts for daddy!

Just over six months ago, my daughters had an amazing time making their dad nighttime shirts with fabric markers for Father’s Day and it was not that much of a surprise when they stated that they wanted to make him work polo shirts for Christmas. Unlike the shirts made with fabric markers and their favorite colors, they decided to embroider designs on polo shirts that daddy could wear to church or work. Of course, the polo shirts were made with colors that he already wears on a daily basis, however these would not have alligators or the letter U on them. These shirts were going to be made to rock their artwork.

Naturally, our first step was to go on my favorite craft store app and began ordering what we needed to take these designs from paper to cotton. I ordered two embroidery hoops along with floss and needles as well as fabric transfer paper and two men’s polo shirts in red and blue. When the materials came in, I cut out squares to match the size of the hoops and the ladies quickly went to work. One drew a dog face along with two upside down L’s and T. When asked what the design meant, I was given the classic answer from the kindergartner of “I don’t know.” Her slightly older counterpart designed a dog with a mark on his belly. Then I carefully traced these one of a kind designs on transfer paper and once the ink was dried, the paper was then ironed onto the shirts. Once the paper was ready, I assisted my children with sewing their designs on the shirts. Of course, it took a lot of patience and being very careful with no fingers being poked at any point of the process. Although the shirts were not exactly up to looking professional, the girls were extremely pleased with the end result.

Now the shirts are finished and will likely be wrapped in the next day or two, just in time to be unwrapped near the Christmas tree later this week. The girls made their daddy something special and he got clothes along with a couple of other things he will surely enjoy!
