What do you when the Christmas tree ornaments keep tempting your children?
For my children, they are more than ready for their six day Thanksgiving break to be over and I’d be fibbing if I did not say that their cat is ready for them to go back too. They have had quite the break with out of state cousins who came to visit, then decorated our Christmas tree before they participated in holiday shopping and these ladies even saw a Christmas light festival. The weather has been unseasonably cold nearly the whole time with flurries that did not accumulate into anything worth playing in. So as any parent who has had young kids can imagine, my daughters clearly have a bout of cabin fever. They also have a strong attraction to their Christmas tree filled with ornaments and when one of my girls asked to make an ornament, I knew what to do.
I went looking through craft kits that I have on a shelf and quickly found a five pack of felt ornaments that I bought last Christmas at our local $1.25(ish) dollar store. They were all the same penguin ornament with all of the decorations that they needed to be warm by the tree. Some of the felt pieces no longer stuck together (likely due to age), but the parts of each ornament were nothing that a regular glue stick could not handle. After all, a glue stick was a much better option than the fabric glue because well, kids will be kids. Between the two girls, there are slight differences on the ornaments that they made and they were satisfied with their finished results. Although the task took less than thirty minutes from start to finish, the children got their creative minds worked while actually being they were able to be in close proximity to the Christmas tree without getting in trouble for playing with ornaments.
The six day break is now coming to a close and these kids are fired up for the next three weeks of school leading up to Christmas. I hope that their teachers are ready for these girls just like the cat loaf under the tree is ready for some peace and quiet from her tree skirt entertainment!
