The Backpack Fairy

How did your children fair on their first day back at school after the break?

Following bedtime last night, the always magical Backpack Fairy returned with her wand in one hand and a big glowing grin on her face. Her nearly two week departure was far too long and her presence was very much overdue as winter break had a hold on the house. While she had been away, the children had played with Christmas gifts and New Year’s horns between trips to see Christmas lights, basketball games and travels to the airport with in-laws. Mommy enjoyed having everyone home, but the Backpack Fairy knew that Daddy needed to go back to teaching and the littles were experiencing a little cabin fever that only a school bus ride could easily fix.

With a mug of hot tea in her hand, Mommy watched with a smirk on her face as the Backpack Fairy lifted up her wand and started dancing around the backpacks with glee. The school issued laptops were placed on the table and charged, as they prepared for little fingers to pound on their keyboards. Two serving sized bags of Goldfish swam their way into the front pockets of backpacks while two water bottles were placed on side pockets ready for the thirsty students. Clothes were selected and placed in front each bag with ease and care. When the packing was complete and the Backpack Fairy whispered quietly in the air, “check the dishwasher and coffee maker, my dear.” Mommy had everything ready for two kids in the morning and even had a head start with coffee set to brew just before clock goes off.

The Backpack Fairy had done her job and all was dependent now on Old Man Winter to play his part. The brave man also had been successful as there was no snow on the roads this morning. The yellow school bus creeped down the hill this morning like a caterpillar to take the students to school. It might only be two days of school this week, but after more than ten days off, anything will do!
