The Squid Had No Chance

But momma, he looked so good!

This week we took Daddy to our yearly pilgrimage to the hibachi restaurant for his birthday and enjoy things that are not normally consumed during the spring sports season. In preparation for Japanese cuisine, young people attending the meal promised that they would try food that they never had before. Naturally when the waiter came, the promise was quickly dumped by the youngsters with the words of chicken nuggets were presented on the menu. It appeared that the effort of trying was just not going to be in the card that evening.

Both children humored the idea of onion soup, but neither got past the first sip. Then they received the clanking of the cooking tools while the chef did his show, but the rice that came afterwards was only greeted by one child. Zucchini and onions were passed on which luckily ended up on the parents’ plates. All seemed doomed and hope was nearly lost, but that was before the main course.

Daddy first offered his filet mignon and his shrimp, however they were absolutely nothing in comparison to the chicken nuggets. Momma’s seafood faired a little better until the youngest dining daughter discovered the calamari. Oh the calamari! They may have been about twelve small pieces of the squid meat, but Momma only had about five pieces. While the maternal figure indulged in her scallops and shrimp, the tiny hands with a pair of chopsticks kept sneaking over the border of the plate and stealing the calamari. The child was quite pleased that she tried the seafood for which she really liked.

Both parents debated whether or not they were going to spill the beans to what the little girl loved. It was determined that the bandaid would be ripped off and showed the seafood connoisseur what she consumed. The fear that she would not touch it again was unwarranted. The little girl was mad in love with eating calamari and nothing was going to change the fact. A promise was made and success was at hand!
