What happens when a pom pom no longer has ties to its hat?
This caper of a tale is courtesy of a cold Sunday morning that quickly became frigid when the pom pom from my five year’s winter cap fell on the church floor like it was seeking sanctuary. This momma saw this leap from a five years old head to the floor in slow motion and attempted, rather gracefully, to grab said runaway before the dangerous pair of eyes saw the commotion that was quickly getting out of hand. The pom pom was stuffed in my purse before the wanted poster was hung and the hat was placed in the sleeve of its winter coat with matching mittens hidden inside. The coat was given to the owner’s dad and the hidden secret was no more when the hat slipped out during the transaction.
Immediate pews in the church were now alerted by the suddenly devastated child as her beloved Christmas accessory was now in two and she began to madly search for a red and pink ball of fluff. This momma reassured that the sneaky top was indeed hidden inside of a purse full of crayons and unused tissues. The mass was conducted without further incident, but was quickly followed up the now answer hungry child. The cries of not wanting to wear a hat without a pom pom were absolutely no match for a negative wind chill. The concerns of the future of a hat and its pom pom where quickly squashed when the game plan had been revealed that they would be reunited with needle and thread.
While the reunion of hat and pom pom brought extreme comfort to their young owner, the momma surgeon became nervous as the fate of warmth now rest in her talented sewing hands. Disappointment was not going to be hers for the taking and once everyone was home, the work would now begin. With needle and red thread in tow, four passes of thick thread replaced the scrap piece of the lonely piece of yarn that attempted to wrestle that crazy pom pom on top of the hat. Once the work had been completed, the hat which was reunited with its runaway rascal passed its quality control check in the formerly crying eyes of the five year.
Success was achieved and the hat has not allowed the pom pom to flee since. It was now safe to leave to go outside once again!
