Can you make a purchase in an used bookstore without buying a book?
As a treat last evening, we took our kids to the used bookstore near our home and based on the purchases, you would have thought we went to the craft store next door instead. The kids’ favorite used bookstore always has a whole bunch of odds and ends when you enter the door and last night’s trip made no exception for this. Of course, we were greeted by a lot of Halloween decorations like huge spiders, spooky spiderwebs and fun knickknacks. There were also many books relating to the upcoming holiday and interesting crafts as well. So when my youngest saw the glow in the dark rock painting kit displayed in front of the store, I knew we were not leaving without it. The girls also got some animal toys while their mom got another crochet kit for another day. There were no books in yesterday’s haul.
My daughters woke up this morning and decided that after breakfast it was imperative that they must paint their rocks immediately. I would normally say no to an early morning craft activity especially a mess one, but elected to say yes as our Saturday soccer games were a little later than normal. Quickly the newspaper was laid out, the water cup was filled and the girls quickly began to paint. I offered to show the painters the pamphlet with all of the instructions for the designs on the box, but the ladies had no interest as they already had an idea of what their rocks would look like. Within thirty minutes, the gray rocks were covered in regular and glow in the dark paint which all were provided in the kit.
When I say that these rocks need some time to dry, I am certainly not kidding. Three hours after the painting had commenced, they were still wet and some black paint ended up on a light color soccer uniform. Ten hours after the last piece of artwork was finished the rocks were dry and ready to be hand inspected by the artists. I sat the rocks under a light for the rest of the evening, but they never glowed at bedtime. Depending on how long the paint kit sat on a shelf may have resulted in the lack of pigmentation in the dark. Regardless of the no glowing, the girls were pleased with how their rock pieces worked out.
So can you buy anything, but books at a bookstore? Sure, you can sometimes, but I also recommended picking up some good reads too!
