Mixing It Up With Bubbles

Nothing beats boredom than an experiment involving a mess. A mess with soap is even better.

This past Saturday, my husband arranged play time for our daughters at my mother in law’s home. My mother in law’s home is a blast from the past with a lot of toys that my generation played with and quite honestly, the ones I always wished I had. So you can only imagine my surprise when I entered her home to see my two kids planted in front of her tablet, zoned out. After the tablet was turned off, the zoned out state of these two quickly made a turn into a case of bored. It was a beautiful day and this is how my children has chosen to do with their Saturday. Absolutely disappointing.

I was determined to make Sunday anything, but a repeat of sitting in front of a screen. Following church, I took our girls to the grocery store and bought some ingredients. My kids never even noticed and after we got home, I promised my kids that we were going to have a science experiment. As they played with their toys, I grabbed everything that we needed to make homemade bubbles. There was corn syrup, dish soap and water along with a measuring cup and a giant pan. Of course there were also bubble wands, a lot of them which all prepared on the back porch outdoor table.

I summoned the girls outside and they saw all the pieces to the science experiment. Taking turns, each girl put in some syrup and dish soap. I added the finishing touch of water and mixed together until bubbles started appearing on top of the mixture. The light bulb had clicked and the girls knew what their experiment was. Both grabbed bubble wands and started blowing bubbles everywhere in the yard. The mixture was not as good as store bought, but that minor detail did not matter to these girls. When they were done making bubbles, they decided to take their mixture to another level and began cleaning the outdoor toys. When each plastic and rubber toy was covered, a hose came out and washing all the evidence of an experiment away. Not only was I successful in beating boredom, but I also had all the toys cleaned. All of this for least than five dollars.

Sometimes it is not how much you spend or how creative you are, making fun and a mess can definitely cure a case of boredom!

Homemade Bubbles: 1/3 cup of corn syrup, 1/2 of dish soap and 2 cups of water (more water may be needed depending on the soap). Recommend doing this outside as it can be a little messy!
